In November I was able to go to my annual quilting retreat at Loon Lake. This is one of my favourite quilting get aways! Although I have another little get away with my quilting peeps in the early spring where a very small group of us go to Mayne Island - MIR. But that is another post.

The Loon Lake retreat is run and organized by Krista - of Poppyprints fame. She has been organizing this retreat as well as the day long QBTB retreats for a number of years. And I have been lucky enough to have been going to her retreats almost as long as she has been doing them - but not quite! Krista's retreat organizing skills are amazing!

Interestingly enough I was first introduced to Krista's retreats by my husband! Of course! Jim was driving back from the village store one Saturday afternoon and he saw a sign at the village hall that said Quilting Retreat. He - of course - parked the car - walked into the hall and said "My wife is a quilter". Haha. So the ladies at the retreat said - tell her to come up and say hello! So Jim rushed home and told me I had to go up to the hall and see the quilters! So off I went and I discovered there were a number of women from my quilt guild there as well as many people I had seen at the local quilt shop. I chatted a bit and then went home. And then, a few months later Krista had an empty spot that she needed to fill and she thought of me - I was thrilled and I've met the most wonderful group of women over the past 7-8 years. Krista will have a QBTB once every other month or so and I have attended almost all QBTB since that first invite. Even in a cast and a wheelchair last January I popped up for a visit.
Then Krista decide to try her hand at expanding to a weekend retreat. The first few years the November long weekend retreats were held on Bowen Island at the CNIB Lodge there. It was a nice spot. The little village area around Snug Cove was easy walking distance and had lots of little shops for a Saturday afternoon wander. There was a hot tub - and deer wandering the grounds around the hall. We went to Bowen Island for three years and then CNIB was making changes and a new venue needed to be found. And since then we have been going to Loon Lake.
I have been very fortunate that life events such as broken ankles and surgeries and grandbabies being born have all managed to present themselves in such a way that I have never had to miss a year of retreat! Although there has been things that have tried to get in the way. Jim and I celebrated our 15th wedding anniversary at a little restaurant on Bowen Island as I was at Retreat and he felt we should do something! Fortunately it was easy for him to walk on the ferry to Bowen Island and we had a lovely meal and I just took a few hours off from my retreating! That was 5 years ago. This November we will be married for 20 years!

Loon lake is a really beautiful venue. Although there aren't any little shops within walking distance there are many things about Loon Lake that make it a special quilting retreat. The lodge is tucked away at the very end of a long road up into a B.C. forest - sitting right on the lake. There is a hiking trail around the lake - I hear it's a great hike but I've been dealing with some kind of ankle issue almost since we started going there. The lodge is bright and clean and kind of "wilderness lodge" like with a second floor with a big stone fireplace. The rooms are big and comfortable - all bedding and towels are provided. The staff are wonderful - the food is some of the best I've had at any retreat. The kitchen staff go out of their way to work around the many diets that are out there today - - not for me - I'll eat anything! Especially if someone else is cooking it.

It seems that each year a new quilter or two will come to the retreat. There are a few "regulars" that attend all the time and then for various reasons some quilters are not able to attend so new quilters come in their place It's always great to meet new quilters. The past couple of years there have been a few quilters that have come hundreds and hundreds of miles - quilters that Krista has met through her blog and Instagram. I am fairly shy and I don't follow many of the new blogs. If you have Instagram and search #loonlakequilters you will find a bunch of photos from the last retreat. They are a good look into what can happen at Loon Lake.

But I enjoy the diversity of the women in the group and the amazing creativity of the new quilters - well all the quilters - that come to the retreat. The past two years there has been a quilter who is a machine quilter extrodanaire and I have been - wandering over and asking for advice - begging for help - coveting her amazing quilting. Her name is Janet and she has a blog called "What Comes Next". This year we talked about my desire for a quilting table. And I got some great ideas. That will be another post.

I look back at all the years I have been quilting as a hobby and the quilt guild I belong to and the retreats and classes and workshops I have attended - I have met many wonderful women - and men. But I think that the women that I have formed the closest friendships with - all of those women, I met through Krista's retreats. Maybe it was because we had those moments where we were all together in one big room - still in pyjamas in the middle of the day - sharing life events with each other - laughing and helping with band aids when a rotary cutter got to close! Or a pair of snips got accidentally impaled in an upper thigh! I'm not really a mushy person and sometimes I think I get overwhelmed a bit with it all and forget to say Thank you - but I don't know if Thank you if even enough at times. The friendships that I formed with my quilting friends goes way beyond quilting and way beyond anything. All they have done for me in the past three years. It's really been amazing! It's really meant a lot to me. More than I could ever express.
But I was still away and on the boat.

Andrew moved home and was "sort of" living with us during the summer.
I get the purple cast removed on Thursday!! Yay. Then on to the next phase - which will probably include a new a different pain as I start putting weight on my foot. But hopefully it is a good pain -a "things are getting better pain"!

I have been up to the chair more and more. The chair is reclining but it doesn't quite work well enough to get my foot higher than my heart.

But it seems I was not out of bed early enough this morning! Somebody is sitting in MY chair! And not all that happy when I demanded she vacate!

I have been slowly getting better. My foot is swelling less and not turning such a deep shade of purple when it is down.

It has been a very quiet Christmas season around here - years from now when I look back on the photos I will wonder why there isn't a Christmas 2012 folder! I didn't even pull out the camera. I took a couple of pictures with my phone and that was it!

Jim has gone back to work after his Christmas break - I'm sure he is happy for the break from his Christmas break!

I have been able to be up in the chair more and more so I have been busy hand quilting the Civil War BOM quilt.

I have it in a puddle on the floor beside me and Jenny thought one day that it might be there just for her.

<div class="separator"style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator"style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Pamhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01741073501328591544noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-21570992.post-3469789592907610912012-12-26T13:09:00.000-08:002012-12-26T18:37:07.216-08:00Merry Christmas from the West ( Wet) CoastIt has been incredibly wet and rainy here. I'm not sure if it is wetter than normal or if one wet winter blends into another wet winter. Since I haven't left the house for three weeks I am certainly not the best judge of the weather anyway.

I am still trying to figure out the bet way to upload pictures and post to my blog from my iPad. I am still finding the most comfortable spot for me is in the bed with my foot elevated higher than my heart. Within a few minutes of my foot being down my toes turn the same shade of purple as my cast and then the more they are down the more tingling and burning I suffer by the end of the day.

This is a picture of Jenny on a walk to Whyte lake in West Vancouver. My neighbour and walking partner took Jenny and her dog Django for a walk last week and took photos all along the way and sent me the Picasa photo album so I could enjoy the walk as they did. That was such a wonderful thing for her to do. I go through the album often and I think every time I view it I cry. But I know that this will end and I will be back!
I have my laptop upstairs now and I have moved to the reclining chair in the living room - sort of -- I still get a lot of swelling in my foot and my cast is quite snug and I don't have a lot of room for swelling so my foot really needs to be elevated most of the time.

These a couple of pictures of Hunter and Phoenix that were taken this fall at a farm close to where they live.

Hunter is doing great. He is so sharp - he just doesn't miss a thing! He turned 4 years old last April. He just had tubes put in his ears the beginning of December. He is just a sweetie and Jessica says he is really growing up. He wears the glasses to correct a bit of cross eye - and he used to just pull them off and throw them as far as his little arms could throw. He has lost a pair or two. When I was there in July we were running around a park in Jessica's neighbourhood and she said -- Where are Hunter's glasses? I panicked and spent 20 minutes searching the ground where we were playing - and then decided to look a little higher - and there they were dangling from an inside branch on a bush - thank heavens I found them!! But now he is keeping them on more often than not.

Phoenix is such a cutie - and she looks a lot like her mother! And she is chatting up a storm! She is a very determined little girl - much like her mother - and her brother. She just turned 3 in November. Her and Hunter will only be one school year apart. I think it is so wonderful they are so close in age.

This is a small quilt - I can't remember the exact size - 24inchs by 20 inches or so. There was a challenge in my quilt guild - "In the Gloaming" We were given two fat quarters of fabric - the black batik and the blue batik.
" A Wound with a View"

This was a challenge for me. I used a photo ( the photo below) that I had taken with a photo app on my phone. The photo was taken from our deck one evening - as I had been on the deck with my broken ankle most of the summer - 2011. Hence the name.

I used all of the batik fabric as one piece for the to foreground and then the blue fabric plus a lighter blue fabric for the sky. I had to make a line drawing of the photo and then enlarge it in sections and then I traced it on to fusible Steam a Seam. I did a bit of thread painting for the moon and then used my friend Dianne's Shiva Paint sticks to blend the blue sky and add a bit of glow to the orange sunset. I think if I did it again I would change a few things in the sky and the sunset but otherwise I was pleased with the result - and I won a ribbon for the challenge! Yay!

Today is Jim's birthday. He is 56 today. And today is my parents 56 th wedding anniversary. Happy Anniversary mum and dad!!!
Poor Jim is stuck spending his birthday with me - in my state. I can't even go out and buy him a card. :((. He says its alright but...... Anyway there is nothing I can do about it. He has invited a friend over for a Ploughmans lunch and a pint of his home made English bitter. He has been saving a nice piece of Stilton just for today.

He has been working very hard at all the various household tasks. He took the first two weeks of my recovery off work as I was basically on bed rest. Although I found it didn't hurt as much as Holly had exclaimed! Thank goodness for that. Holly - the orthopedic surgeon's receptionist had scared the stuffing out of me. Although it did hurt a lot and now my big toe is numb and tingly.

I am going to try to post a couple of quilt photos. The quilt is "The Lion Finally Sleeps Tonight". It is a quilt I made for Eric. I upload the pictures from my phone but I can't see where they have gone. So I am not sure what will happen when I publish this post.

It's been a bit of a time of it! Well mostly I haven't posted because I have been mainly working off my iPad and most of my photos are on my computer. So that's my excuse.

I am trying out posting from blogger on the iPad. This will be a bit of a test.

After returning from our latest boating adventure I had a big surgery on my left foot.

I had - are you ready for it-----
1. Arthroscopy and micro fracture of the ankle joint
2. Triple arthrodesis
3. Calcaneal osteotomy
4. Bone graft
5. Gastrocnemius slide.

I was in plaster cast for two weeks and yesterday it was removed and all the various staples and sutures were removed and I got this nice purple cast - kind of matches the colour of my purple toes. I am doing quite well - all things considered. Although it has required a fair amount of medication to maintain my wellness.

I have been quilting. And if I like the way this blog post turns out I may try posting again. I am on crutches ( again) for the next 6-8 weeks. Depends on how long it takes for these poor bones to heal.

So we will see what happens when I press publish.....
Saw a small pod of Orca's around the Copeland Islands

Prideaux Haven is now a new favorite place.

I am trying out a new blog app for my phone - so thus is a test.

Jim is not an Orca! I can't quite figure out the photo upload in this app -- Jim and I went swimming in Prideaux Haven.
I am still having a problem with my ankle - but that is a long story.

Jim and I have been taking some boating courses. We took the Canadian Power Squadron course in the fall and then in May we went to Boating University at Trawlerfest in Anacortes in Washington. I took a two day "Women and Boating" course from Captain Carol Cuddyer. Great course!! Carol was very encouraging and knowledgeable.

So ---- on June 10th we dipped our toes in the ocean ( so to speak ) and we rented a boat out of Comox B.C. and headed off to Desolation Sound.

The boat was a 40 foot boat called a Grand Mariner. We spent a few hours on Sunday getting orientated to the boat. I was lucky enough to snag the anchor on a cable on my very first time dropping the anchor. Luckily we were still in the harbour and help was close by. That was a bit of a concern but after that I figured it would only go up from there.

The first day - Monday - we motored off across the Straight of Georgia. It was a little scary at first but we were able to put all of our new found knowledge to use and realized we really could do this. Even though I had never EVER done anything like this in my life! Jim has spent a lot of time on fishing boat - although not in the captain's chair.

After we made it safely across the Comox Bar and the Straight of Georgia we spent our first night in Squirrel Cove on Cortes Island.

We anchored in the very calm and pretty little cove. The day was overcast and grey but not raining. We were able to drop the anchor and pull the anchor for the rest of the trip without incident. It is amazing to me that the anchor can hold the boat in a very confined area without having the boat float away. I would frequent check that we didn't move. Even during the night I would wake up and try to check our position. The first night after we got back home I would wake up and look out the sliding glass door and see the flashing light that marks a rock on Bowen Island and think " okay - good - the boat hasn't moved".

The following day - Tuesday - was a drizzly, wet and grey day. We decided to not do a long day of site seeing and motoring as the clouds were so low the visibility was very poor. We headed out late morning and went directly from Squirrel Cove to Prideaux Haven. A very popular and pretty anchorage.

This is a picture from the boat anchored in Prideaux Haven - looking out towards Melanie Cove. We were hoping to anchor in Melanie Cove but there were about 8 boats - mostly sailboats - already anchored there. We did about four loops around Prideaux Haven before we settled on a spot. I'm sure we provide a little afternoon entertainment for the rest of the inhabitants!

We had a very nice evening on the boat. We were beginning to get more comfortable. We used the little deck BBQ in the rain to cook up some Lamb sausage ( won't take lamb sausage again - very hard on the BBQ and Jim had to work hard to get all the lamb grease off it.).

I am going to end here and pick up on day three from the computer where I have most of the pictures. I needed a few pictures that I took with the IPhone.

Pam.

Posted using BlogPress from my iPad
Pamhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01741073501328591544noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-21570992.post-52182648736160103182012-02-04T18:34:00.000-08:002012-02-04T18:34:25.860-08:00Snowy OwlI was a Guide leader when Jessica was in Girl Guildes and my name was Snowy Owl!

There has been a large number of Snowy Owls spending the winter in the Ladner B.C area so today we took a drive out there to see them. It was wonderful to see them! We saw about 12-15. We heard that last weekend there were 30-40 out there.

We got a few great pictures. They were just sitting along the drift wood along the beach. We think this is a female as she has a bit more grey/brown on her and the males are mostly white. Isn't she beautiful - and they are quite large birds. We also saw a couple of other brown owls - I think they were called Short eared owls.

This eagle was sitting on this pole when we got there - and was still on the pole when we were leaving. I think she was finding all the activity quite entertaining!

There were hundreds of people out there! It was amazing. When Jim suggested we go out there - I thought it would be a lovely little walk along the dyke to see the owls - just the two of us! Oh the people - and their cameras! Oh my goodness. Most of the people there had cameras with lenses the size of a small car!! Good heavens. Look at all the cars!!

Jim brought the spotting scope - which was nice to have. The binoculars were good but you could get an even better look through the spotting scope. Quite a few people stopped as we were looking and we let them look through the spotting scope as well.

And here is a quick quilt picture. I have finished it completely now and it is for the neighbours who had a baby girl (Charlie) in November. Jim keeps telling them -- Pam has something for you!! I had decided to do a little stitchery of a bird for the label - so typical me - I am slow! I hope to get the label finished and sewn on this weekend. I have never really done any embroidery - maybe one item as a young child. So I decided to jump on the bandwagon - because I need another "something" to shop for!!

Last weekend we were at the boat show in Seattle. That is a blog post in itself! But those photos are on another camera.
The weekend before Halloween Jim and I headed off to the sunny Okanogan to meet up with my mum and dad for a little get away. So here I am with my mum and dad - standing on two feet - in shoes. I am hiding my cane............. I am doing well - can't walk too far and limping a bit and whining a lot but I have been out of the boot for almost 3 weeks and now I need to try to take off the weight I put on while sitting on the deck and doing nothing for 2 months............and we go to spend the weekend going from winery to winery buying wine!! Like that was a good idea!

Halloween has come and gone and Jim decided he needed to carve a pumpkin this year............
I have been doing a bit of quilting. I am making a baby quilt for Vincia ( who got married a couple of years ago and I made the African Wedding quilt for - I will see if I can find a link for that.) Here is the link -- African wedding quilt

Vincia gave me a Winnie the Pooh receiving blanket when she gave me the fabric she wanted in the wedding quilt. So she phoned a few weeks ago to say she is expecting - so I can take a hint :) It was hard to find fabric to match the colours in the receiving blanket but I found the green polka dot fabric in Armstrong BC on our little trip in October. I have a plan to put a small narrow light yellow border between the quilt and the green border. I had saved a picture a couple of years ago of a split nine patch with Winnie the Pooh fabric - this quilt is pretty much the same as the picture I had saved at the colours in the fabric are the same. Vincia loves the original Winnie the Pooh - not the Disney Winnie the Pooh - I am not sure where she found the receiving blanket - I hope I have turned her little receiving blanket into a quilt she will be happy with in the end.

I am off to a quilting retreat next weekend so I can finish the baby quilt and do a few more of the many Civil war blocks I am working on at the present!

But I am still alive :))
It has been quite the event to post this video! But since I am NOT doing much else I persevered and I think I might finally have done it! I took this video with my IPhone gripped in one hand as I held the crutches as well.
I shot this video the other afternoon – just to entertain myself mostly. The Bed, Bath and Beyond bag at the bottom of the stairs is a bag of laundry I am working to getting to the laundry room – just to clarify.
I continue to spend most of the day on the deck – but at least now the sun is shining – it might actually get warm this weekend!
Believe it or not I am actually planning to go to the big Quilt show in Tacoma next weekend – my fabulous quilting peeps have organized a FART ( Fabric Acquisition Road Trip) and the big APNQ show ( which is now called something different) is in Tacoma instead of Seattle this year. My friend Dianne has found a wheelchair rental for me – and has volunteered to be my pusher – who can resist a personal pusher?? I have had this trip planned for months so I hope I don’t have too many problems with my mobility down there – but I sure could use an outing!!
I have been working on my Wool BOM and I have almost finished Block 11 of 16 and I have also started another Dear Jane block – FINALLY ---YAY for me!!
It seems there was also a problem with my comment section on my blog so I have changed settings and we will see how it is working now. Pamhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01741073501328591544noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-21570992.post-73687018570845403312011-08-16T10:04:00.000-07:002011-08-16T10:04:16.879-07:00Fairy quilt and GrandbabiesYou would think I would be blogging every day now that I am incarcerated here on my deck with nothing to do but drink coffee and quilt!

I have been going like crazy on my Wool Applique project. The weather has finally - hummmm - I don't want to say warmed up because it is still pretty mild but it isn't raining every day. I am spending most days on the deck - looking out at the activities on the water and watching Netflix - right now I am watching "Damages" with Glenn Close and Ted Danson.

I am just uploading a few pictures from my phone and I don't think I had ever posted a picture of the quilt I made for Phoenix when it was completely finished. Jim and I took the quilt with us when we went to Calgary in May - on the Mother's Day weekend. Of course I didn't take any pictures of it before I took it there so finally Jessica sent me a few pictures - as well as a couple of pictures of the kids in the yard this summer. And I know I haven't posted pictures of the grandkids in a long time - as Anna had mentioned - so the pictures are for her :)
I used the little squares that were on the panel for the corner blocks but I had to sew a little green border around each square to make them the right size for the sashing. It took awhile to find the right border and sashing fabric and then I needed more of the dark green for the binding - so it took longer than I thought but I am very pleased with the final quilt. Jessica says Phoenix really loves it. And it is much larger than a crib quilt so it can lay nicely on her little bed - as she is no longer in a crib.

I am starting to go a little stir crazy though. I went outside last night for a little exercise hop up the driveway - which is much steeper than I thought!! And coming back down was almost scary! Jim walked ahead of me just in case I lost control and ended up at the bottom smashed into the garage - sort of like the drywall - but that's another story.

But I am finding ways to entertain myself. My blog might benefit.

Finally a bit of summer has come to the west coast.

I have myself set up on the deck. I signed up for Netflix and I am working on my wool appliqué BOM from Creative Edge Quilt shop in North Van. Jim made a lovely BBQ Leg of lamb and Greek salad for dinner last night. It sounds like it's going to be panko breaded jumbo prawns tonight. Hopefully I don't gain a bunch of weight sitting around and enjoying Jim's cooking. Now he's going to put a keg of beer on tap!!

I have to say that what has happened in Norway is just heart breaking. My deepest sympathy to the whole country and all those parents who's lives will never be the same again.
I figured I had better do something about that!

It is a bit of an interesting story about how I started blogging.

It all started because in August of 2000 I fell on a little piece of uneven sidewalk in Edinburgh Scotland while on vacation with my mother and sister. My sister had just left us to go back to work in Africa and my mum and I were off to do a bit of laundry. I fell coming out of the laundromat and broke my right ankle. Although - I didn't go to the hospital - or doctor, because I didn't really think it was broken. It got pretty swollen and bruised but if I didn't move it too much it didn't hurt too much and we carried on with our planned vacation. Two week later when I got back to Canada I got my ankle X-rayed - because it really had not improved at all - and it was broken! So that began a year long process of a multitude of splints, casts and crutches - X-rays and CT scans - finally surgery and Physio.

During that year - right leg mostly out of commission - I spent quite a bit of time on the computer - surfing the web - which was still fairly new at that time. I was watching the Soap - Days of Our Lives - which is often stupid - and there was a message board that I would visit and read how other people thought it was stupid as well.

The woman who ran the message board - had an acquaintance - in Georgia - who was competing for the Next Food Network Star television show and asked us to vote for Hans online - which I did a few times -- quite a few as I didn't have much else to do! Hans got on the show but I didn't even get to see the show in Canada - so that was too bad - all my voting and not able to watch the result. I think he came in third.

Time had passed - I was back to work and we had moved and life carried on and I was still following the message board and keeping up with how Hans was doing with his career - I sort of felt I knew him a bit after all!! Then Hans started a blog - Hans was diagnosis with stomach cancer and was blogging about his experiences and treatments. Hans did really well with his surgery and treatment and is cancer free now. I kept up with his blog - it was the old Live Journal format - then one day Hans switched to Blogspot and I was quite intrigued - and in checking out blogspot and seeing how easy it was to set up - I decided to start my own blog.

Why am I remembering all this......................

On Monday while out on a hike with my neighbour and the dogs - I fell and broke my left ankle!

This time I went right to the hospital and had it x-rayed. My cheeky mother says she hopes it's better in under two years!! So - I've been kind of cranky lately!!

But on the sewing front - prior to the fall I had been puttering away on a few things........

I made a mug rug for one of my Quilting Peeps -

And she made a mug rug for me -----

She called it "Howe Sound Spring" It is much like looking out at Howe Sound from our deck.

And I have been working on the Barbara Brackman Civil War Block of the Week blocks.

I am a few weeks behind but I have time on my hands to catch up now! Although I am still very uncomfortable and I am finding I can only sit with my foot hanging down for a short time and then I have to elevate it again.

And I feel sorry for poor Jim who has been called to action quite a bit this year and is now back on kitchen duty - Like he says "you're lucky you have a husband who likes to cook"
I am lucky - but not happy!!
There were some many beautiful pieces of clothing that I couldn't put them all on the post.

Jim and I attended the pole raising in Skidegate when we were there. It was the first Chief's pole to be raised in over 100 years in Skidegate. There was a huge potlatch after the pole raising that we did not attend. Although everyone is welcome to attend - we went in to the hall where it was being held and it was a very special event and it was going to be a very long night - they can go on until the wee hours of the morning and we had Jenny in the car. It would have been amazing to see the dancing - but I am sure that would have been quite late in the night.

There was probably a couple of hundred people at the pole raising. The pole was being raised at the home of the new Chief. Here is a link to a blog called "Living on the Edge" This blog as some wonderful pictures and more information about the chief and the traditions - well worth looking at.

Jim and I took a few pictures of the wonderful Haida clothing.

The cedar hats are made by the Haida people and the Otter pelts are used for many things - clothing and trim on the head bands. When we were in Old Masset we stopped at a place where the woman in the centre was weaving the headband she is wearing and triming it with the Otter fur.

Entire families dressed for the occasion.
This is the chief and his wife watching the pole go up. The Haida people are either from the Eagle or Raven clan and Eagles must marry only Ravens - and Ravens only marry Eagles. The chief is an Eagle and his wife is a Raven.

A system of ropes and pulleys ( block and tackle) are used to raise the pole.

Everybody gets in and helps pull on the ropes. There was an incident with a rope breaking and a member of the community that was watching got hit by a block and hurt - some broken ribs - but in the end he was okay - taken away in the ambulance and the work to raise the pole continues.
