My Ironing board cover

I am usually a day late and a buck short when it comes to everything - LOL!! But I thought I would jump on the ironing board bandwagon. As you can see I just bought a brand new cover - barely been used because the other one was getting covered in sticky stuff from the iron on interfacing after making the bag. I have been putting a piece of flannel on the cover to protect it from further sticky stuff. Too bad I can't do the same for my iron!!

The very first ironing board I ever owned was found in the basement of a little old house I rented in 1977. It needed to be held together with bits of twine to keep it from collapsing. I used that ironing board until 2004 when Jim's mum died and I inherited her ironing board. It is an old wooden board from who knows when. The top is wood and the main structure of the board is wood except for the metal supports. It stands on it's own without any twine! The problem with these old boards as they are designed for much shorter people. I put a light at the end in hopes that would help - but when it comes to ironing those little itty bitty Dear Jane pieces you need to see them! I have a table top ironing board that is in need of a new cover (it is covered with sticky stuff) and it is also covered in other stuff -LOL

So I went off to Linens and Things and got the bed risers to put under the legs. Now you certainly can't do this with most ironing boards but with this design it worked perfectly. The ironing board is now at the right height for me. And I still leave the light there. I find the older I get - the darker everything is!!

  1. To clean your iron, turn it on low, pour coarse salt on to a sheet of wax paper and iron the salt working off the sticky part.

  2. Great idea with the risers! Why don't I ever think about those useful thingys?
Oh - it's not your age you know, that's making things a bit dimmer. They just don't make lightbulbs like they used to! (wink)

  3. I agree they don't make light bulbs like they used to! So I have several on at a time when I iron and sew.

  5. Now that is thinking outside the box: using risers like that! Plus, the light is a stoke of genius. I have an old clamp on light that I think I'll dig out to see if it will work. Thanks.

  6. Bed risers are the best invention!

The Tramp is always laughing at me as I sit surrounded by as many lights as I can clamp on my sewing tables! Old eyes....sigh.

  7. Your ironing board almost looks like mine. Mine isn't painted green and you seem to have a bigger top. A standard ironing board cover does not fit on mine. Hence why I use 2 yards of fabric! Hum.... the height works for me. It's next to my machine so I can iron as I sew! I read you about the light thing. When we renovation my sewing studio this summer, I'm adding more light! Thanks for sharing!

  8. I have an ironing board like this. I use it as a side table next to my comfy chair in my sewing room and I love it! Was my MIL's.
