I have finished all the blocks for the African quilt. I have decided that it will be 16 blocks. So I spent the afternoon playing with the layout on my design wall. I made 5 blocks with Dancing Mama's and 11 plain blocks -- which is probably not the best combination for making an evenly placed layout.
Layout #1. The Dancing Mama blocks are randomly placed in the quilt -- looks okay.
Layout #2. Dancing Mama's in each corner and then one block in the centre -- sort of centre, because it is 4 rows of 4 blocks there is no centre. I'm not fussed on this layout.
Layout #3. All the Dancing Mama's in the centre except for that one block -- see the problem of having 5 blocks of the Mama's!! The problem of course is I'm out of the black fabric - I still have lots of African fabric and lots of Mama's. I could use some other black fabric but this fabric is from Maiwaa Handprints and it is a different texture than regular cotton and blends well with the texture of the African fabric. The regular black cotton looks different when mixed with the rest of the fabric.
Don't like this layout at all.
Layout #4. Again random placement of the Mama's. Better placement of the blocks I think. So - in the end this is the one I am going to go with. What do you think? Opinions and suggestions needed.
I agree that this is the best choice. I definitely vote for random placement of the mamas - and I like this one much better than the first. Good balance to the eye.
ReplyDeleteI vote for random too! That one just looks best to me.
ReplyDelete#4 looks the best. I think after seeing the photo's on Donna's blog we all need to vist you for a retreat, or perhaps move in...lol... Fancy having that view and not sharing it.....lol... I'm green with envy.
ReplyDeleteYeah, I like #4 the best as well.
ReplyDeleteI like the random layouts best. This is going to be a wonderful quilt.
ReplyDeleteI think it is going to be a beautiful quilt no matter which layout you choose. In #1 and #2, they seem to be in diagonal rows, which appeals to me for some reason since it probably isn't the proper African way. #4 has spaced them out nicely.
ReplyDeleteCiao,
ReplyDeleteI prefer #4.
no 4..........did you read all the comments about your pics on my blog..........
ReplyDeleteNumber 4 has my vote !
ReplyDeleteIt's beautiful, Pam.
Hugs & smiles,
NADINE
4, definitely 4. Wonderful colors!
ReplyDelete#4 is my fav but i really think any of these layouts would make a fabulous quilt!!!
ReplyDeleteWow, the blocks are beautiful. I, too vote for #4.
ReplyDeleteEach layout has its' own appeal and it would be hard to choose which one to go with.
ReplyDeleteYour Dancing Mama blocks look so great! Layout #4, random placements, is my favorite. Cannot wait to the your continued progress.
ReplyDeleteThe No. 4 is my favorite too. If I can add something: I could imagine putting the dancing mamas block which is on the left on its own a bit higher but not a whole block higher, that is to divide the block on top of it into 2 and put the half block horizontaly, then the dancing mamas, then the other half block, (does that make sense?) so that not 2 dancing mamas blocks are in one horizontal line. Anyway, I love the colours and the movement of that quilt and I am sure you will decide for the best. Take care.
ReplyDeleteI like the first and third arrangements best, but any way you put those blocks together, they are going to make a stunning quilt!
ReplyDeleteI actually like layout #2 the best. I like how the black is somewhat in a circle and the mamas are scattered throughout.
ReplyDelete#4 is great, too!
I like the last photo the best. I had to keep scrolling up and down, but finally it jumped out and said, pick me.

I'm sure you had lots of fun doing this. It's hard to choose but I think I prefer layout number 3.
ReplyDeleteYou quilt looks wonderful. I won't vote as I'm a tad behind in blog reading! It's a sweet looking quilt! How are the finished windows working out? lol Has Jenny gotton into more trouble? It's a good thing she's cute. Speaking of cute, we adopted a stray cat! She must be no older then 5 months. She's a tiny thing. Cute as a botton, black and brown. So now we have 3 cats! Have a great week!
