Border Dilemma

This is the border that I had originally planned for the quilt. I realized today (with the help of Jim!) that I didn't have enough of the red fabric. Although I do have a fat quarter so I can piece the border. Then I wasn't sure if I really liked the red for the border. I was going to have a small inner border of the sock fabric and then use 4 of the monkey squares for the corner blocks.

This next picture is the red fabric that I bought for the back - which I could use for the border fabric and then use something else for the back. I could still use the brown sock fabric as an inner border - and either use the 4 monkey squares in the corner - or not. I am not sure I want to use this fabric because then I have to figure something else out for the back.

The I am wondering about not using the red - but all I have are fat quarters. So what about some stripes and plain fabric. But I find the brown sock fabric looks out of place with the soft pastels.

Then there is stripes and dots -- see how the brown sock fabric looks out of place?

After this whole exercise - I think I might like the red the best. I think it is good to take pictures and then have a good look at them -- and ask for opinions!!!

This one has different corner blocks - I think I prefer the first corner blocks -- brighter and funner!!

I would do a poll - but I don't think I know how to do that. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

  1. I like red on the border with the brown cornerstone. However, I would shrink the brown block and frame it in a thin strip of yellow to tie in the soft colors of the center of the quilt. Hancock's of Paducah sells a lovely double brushed flannel that would work well on the back. It comes in a cream color that would blend nicely. If they cannot get it for you, let me know, as I have an extra piece on hand.

  2. okay I like one BUT my favourite is 4 but with 4 could you do a peep (not sure if that is what you call them) in between the centre and the border and then it would look good with a red binding.......

  3. Pam, I like your first option - the other paler colours get lost in the border. The red adds a lot of punch to the quilt and I have made cornerstones for borders on more than one occasion when I've run out of fabric. I like the top left fabric in the first photo for the cornerstones. What a fun quilt!

  5. Hi Pam,
I like the red border with the first cornerstones- you could make the border narrower and add an inner border ( a small brown one or deep yellow one). It is a cute little quilt- such fun for a new little one.

  6. The red looks great. How about a flange, or narrow strip of the dark yellow inside the red?

  7. I definitely like red for the border, but I think the brown strip get's kind of lost -- maybe something brighter? And, how about doing big pieced blocks of all your pastels for the back?

  8. Hey there Pam
I like the red borders best, they do frame the quilt better than the other options. Is it possible to piece the back with some large pieces? Maybe that way the quilt could be kind of reversible?

  10. You have to choose red borders. Love it that way. Your fabrics are so funny.

  11. Love the red border. If it were me, I'd use brown cornerstones... but plain ones to add a little resting place. It is a VERY adorable quilt - someone's going to be VERY lucky!

  12. This is going to be a cute quilt whatever you decide.

Personally, I like the red border and the brown cornerstones. It seems to just set off your center so well.

  13. At first I thought the red border was too strong but when I saw the paler border i realized that the red is much better. It gives the quilt lots of life. I love it.

  14. I like the softer colors better than the red. Maybe you can use them - piano key? with a small red inner border.

If you pick red, I would use the backing fabric, it is a little less busy. Or you could use lots of red by using both reds.

  16. Hi Pam,
    I prefer the red border; you could add an inner border, perhaps a yellow one or light blue. It´s a beautiful work Pam! I love it! During this week I will send you pictures with the quilt for my nephew with the fabrics that you´ve sent to me; and I will show you some fabrics I´ve got in Buenos Aires on my holidays;
    Hugs, Andrea

  17. Hi Pam! Yet another opinion! I love the 1st red fabric but I would add a nine patch like you have in the main body of your quilt for the corners. I love your quilt - it's so happy!

  19. I agree with most of the other comments. The red border looks great. If you want to bring in more brown then how about a 1" inner border first and then add the red.
It's going to be so cute when done.

  20. I like the red border too! I think Wendy's idea of the small inner brown border would work. You don't have enough of the left over from the vertical border to make the corner stone for the horizontal? Hum... you could make the border not as wide...sort of calculate the width of the border based on your yardage. I do like the quilt! Sweet and unisex too!

  21. I like the cornerstones and agree with Wendy's ideas! As for polling, I need to learn that as well! :D

  22. I like the first red best, and of course I'd say just BUY MORE! LOL! But if that's not an option, go with the red you were going to use for backing and piece what you have left of everything else for the back.

  23. How about a smaller red border next to the quilt and then that dot fabric with the yellow background next.

    Just a thought
